18th Century Style Lacquered Tavern Clock
Fine 18th Century style English lacquered chinoiserie tavern clock or act of parliament clock with fine quality eight day fusee movement in good working condition. The term Act of Parliament clock originates in 1797 when Prime Minister William Pitt introduced a tax on all clocks and time pieces of 5 shillings. Large lacquered clocks as this one were placed in taverns so people could tell the time and avoid the tax, thus the name Tavern clock.
