Cowry Shell with an Interesting History
19th Century carved cowry shell, profusely carved with the clipper ship ‘Romance of the sea’ launched in 1853 in Boston, USA. William H.Henry was commander of the ship. Under the ship is a sextant, globe, anchor and a compass. Above the ship is a spread eagle with Latin, E Pluribus Unum, ‘One of many’ motto on the great seal of the United States.
